Creative Sound BlasterX H7 Tournament Edition – Complete Review
Before starting my review, I would like to thank Creative. They sent me the Creative Sound BlasterX H7 Tournament Edition so I can test it and review it for you guys. Once again thank you for giving me this awesome opportunity.
If you’re a fan of Creative’s headset you might wonder why this model looks so familiar, that is because it’s the upgraded version of the H7 model. Both are very similar with some differences. In fact, the H7 Tournament Edition features a new and sleek design, an upgraded and improved microphone. A refined brushed metal earcup plates and gun metal finishing look and last but not least improved 50mm FullSpectrum™ drivers to give an even more immersive gameplay.
Before we go in an in-depth review, here are my first impression of this gaming headset.
At first look this pair of gaming headset is gorgeous, they are not too flashy, just a bright red X on each earcup which slightly flashes every 3 seconds which I love since red is my favorite color. The rest of the headset is black with the name “Sound Blaster” writing on each side and the top of the headset, giving them a sleek and a professional look.
Some people have claimed them to be heavy, but I find them rather light. I’ve been using the Sound Blaster Tactic Rage for 3 years now, and I can say they are way heavier than the H7 model, plus they are relatively small, so it’s very easy to store them. The cable is excellent, if you’re clumsy like me and often roll over the cord, you won’t have to worry about breaking the wire, plus the cable is red, giving them an even cooler look.
The sound quality is impressive, I’ve been playing a couple of online games with my friends, and I can safely say I am immersed in my game even more than before. The microphone quality is excellent as well, I’m often on Discord with my friends, and I have not heard one complaint about my voice quality. Plus you can use the Sound Blaster software to fully customize your audio quality.

Creative Sound BlasterX H7 Tournament Edition Review
Whats in the box?
The Creative Sound BlasterX H7 Tournament box is very solid and easy to open. Once you open it, you will see the headphones carefully placed on a thin plastic mold. Underneath is a smaller box containing a USB cable the detachable microphone, a 3.5mm audio cable, and the manual.
- Sound BlasterX H7 Headset
- Tethered cable including inline control – 0.4m / 1.3ft
- USB Type A to Micro-B USB braided cable length – 1.5m / 5ft
- 3.5mm 4-pole to 4-pole jack braided cable length – 0.8m / 2.6ft
- Quick Start Leaflet
This model offers two different way to connect the headset to your PC or different platform. The first way is by connecting the 3.5mm into the inline remote and then to your PC or console. However, if you’re playing video games on a PC, I’d recommend using the USB connection, which is the second method. Why? Because the USB uses the built-in 24 bit / 96kHz DAC (digital-to-analog converter).
Once you decided which method you prefer, you’re ready to go. I’d recommend downloading the BlastetX Acoustic Engine Pro and X-Plus Configurator software from Creative’s website to make use of all the customizable audio features.
Design and Features
As I mentioned above, this model is the updated version of the H7. Meaning they are still very similar in design with some slight differences. A noticeable one is the exterior of the ear cups. They now feature a brushed metal styling combined with an X logo that glows red every 3 seconds when the headphones are plugged in. Inside the ear cups, you can find the letter L for the left ear and R for the right ear in red and black color.
The exterior design has not changed for this model. Creative decide to keep the same exterior design since it’s working and they do not need to change it. One of the most essential features a headset should always provide is the comfort, and the H7 TE does not fall short in that category. Similar to their older model, this one includes memory foam inside and leatherette on the outside, making them the perfect pair of headset for those hardcore gaming sessions. On top of that, they are lightweight, adding, even more, comfort for its users.
The earcups are noise canceling, which is great if there’s a lot of noise in your home. I was surprised as this is my first pair of headset which offers noise canceling, it felt weird at first, but I got used to it pretty quickly. I can finally enjoy the full experience of audio gaming without hearing my wife listening to some TV shows in the background.
The reinforced steel headband makes for a snug fit, but I can reassure you, even after a couple of hours of wearing them they still feel as comfortable as the first time I put them on. That is coming from a guy who spends 10hours per day with a headset on its head.
As mentioned earlier, the microphone was redesigned for the H7 Tournament model. While the original model provides a bigger windscreen on the end of the microphone, the H7 is slimmed down for a more elegant look. The body of the microphone is extremely flexible, and you can quickly move it out of the way when you’re eating or drinking, or you can entirely detach it.
Last but not least, a very cool feature from this model is the inline remote, similar to its predecessor. The small remote is attached to the headphone and offers a 3.5mm jack and a micro USB jack, allowing the user to insert their preferred way to connect their headset to the PC. The remote features a built-in volume control, which is excellent when you quickly want to lower or augment the volume, instead of going through your computers sound options to change it.
You can also mute the microphone with the help of a slider switch, a convenient option when you need to talk to someone. It also features a multifunction button can pause and resume music playback or answer and end calls when plugged into a phone.
Let me start by saying the sound quality is out of this world, especially if you connect them via USB and use the BlasterX Acoustic Engine, or X-Plus Mode to further enhance your audio experience.
Creative decide to pack in a redesigned 50mm FullSpectrum driver for the H7 Tournament model. Meaning this model offers better performance than its previous edition. Making the surround sound crystal clear and alive. Leading to the users to be immersed entirely whether he/she is playing video games or watching their favorite movies.
I’ve personally tested these while playing Path Of Exile, sure it is not a heavy audio game but let me tell you I do not miss the sound of a unique item when it falls on the ground ( PoE players will understand ). I’ve also watched a couple of movies and spoke to a couple of friends over Discord, and I can safely say the sound was crystal clear.
On top of already having a fantastic sound quality, you can even further enhance sounds effect with the BlasterX Acoustic Engine Pro software. This application allows the user to set and tweak the 7.1 surround sound. Also, you can control microphone effects, meaning you can swap voice, from lower or higher, from a demon to a robot and more. While I was speaking with my friends on Discord, I used this feature, and let me tell you we hadn’t laugh like that in a long time.
Another handy option for hardcore gamers is the Scout mode, which claims to allow the user to hear further than you usually could. The Engine Pro offers many preset custom audio profiles, some of them are designed for competitive games like League of Legends and Rocket League. On the other side, there are many generic audio profiles such as for listening to movies, music, FPS games, strategy games and even some single player games like Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Creative designed this gaming headset to be utilized by pro gamers ( and hardcore gamer like myself who likes the immersion ). As professional gamers don’t tend to bring their PC when participating in tournaments, that is why the X-Plus Configurator comes to mind. This application allows you to load a particular preset profile into the headset, no matter which PC you are plugged into. You just have to load CS: GO or another profile with the software and voila, you are ready to go. This feature also lets you load a specific profile for the PlayStation 4.
However, if you decide to purchase these for playing on the PS4, you need to keep in mind the USB cable is pretty short, even though the USB port is situated in front of the PS4. Same goes for your gaming PC, you can always purchase a USB extension cable, but I haven’t tested it out yet, I doubt it affects the sound quality, but still worth mentioning. When it comes to the PS4 or other consoles I’d recommend using the 3.5mm jack as it will sound better, at least for me it did. Personally, I tested it with the Last Of Us. I felt so immersed in the game it was fantastic. I could hear the enemies coming towards me, giving me the time to counter attack them.
I tested the microphone on a couple of different chat software, but mainly on Discord. Just a heads up, don’t do what I did, I plugged in the H7, went directly on discord played in the settings and my microphone volume was so low, no one could hear me. I had forgotten entirely to augment my volume sound in the windows option. I lost a good 15 minutes figuring out what was going on.
Anyways, when the problem was dealt with, I got some excellent feedback from my three friends, they even compared it with my last computer headset which was the Sound Blaster Tactic 3d Rage, they told me I sound even sexier with the H7 Tournament, whatever that means.
This microphone does a fabulous job at keeping out the background noise, as my wife and my little boy always watches TV near my computer desk. Usually, when I play with friends I use “Push To Talk,” but now I just go with “Voice Activation” and they don’t hear the background noise as much.
As mentioned above the microphone of the Sound Blaster h7 was redesigned by Creative. It is now a lot slimmer than its predecessor, it’s very flexible and can be detached pretty quickly, a handy option when you’re eating or when you’re just relaxing and watching your favorite TV shows.
When we review products, we often forget the small things, like the Cable quality. It might be not as important than sound or microphone quality, but if you’re a clumsy person like me, you will likely roll over the cord and might break it. That is one reason I have always purchased wireless headsets.
Fortunately for us, the cord quality of the H7 is sturdy and very solid, it’s very similar to an industrial electric cord extension, those big red ones. You won’t have to worry about damaging it even if you roll on it a couple of times, but be careful today is unbreakable.
Is there any alternative?
In fact, there is, here is a small comparison table I have put together so we can compare three other different pairs of headsets which are similar to the Creative Sound BlasterX H7 Tournament Edition.
As you can see, most of them are very similar regarding performance, software and surround sound. Where the H7 shines is in the connectivity, the price, software, and the rating. I have not personally tested all of the other headphone’s software, but from my research, the H7 TE edition offers more customization audio options compared to the other applications.
Most of the other headsets don’t offer a 3.5mm jack, which is not a big problem but it’s something to keep in mind. As for the price, the H7 is the lowest of them all making them one of the best options in this price range.
My Final Verdict
After testing it for several hours of intense video gaming I absolutely love this pair of gaming headset, I still have some testing to do, but untill then, they have amazing me to a whole new level. Unfortunately there is no perfect product in this world. Here is my personally likes and dislikes about the H7 Tournament Edition.
Ultimately, the Sound BlasterX H7 Tournament Edition is a high-end gaming headset. An excellent combination of comfort, a multitude of features, amazing 7.1 surround sound, and a fantastic microphone. Making them an easy recommendation for any headphones enthusiast and hardcore gamers who want a good performing wired headset without breaking their budget.
