During the selection process, we looked at the Refresh rate, Panel type, Resolution, Screen size, Adaptive-Sync and Input options.
We also looked at the screens the professionals were using during the tournaments.
Why is the refresh rate important for a CSGO player?
The refresh rate is the main factor you should look for when purchasing a gaming screen for CSGO, the higher the refresh rate, the better.
The refresh rate is quoted in Hz (hertz), it’s the rate at which the hardware in the monitor is refreshing the display.
This means that’s even if you hit 120FPS with a 60HZ monitor, you won’t see more than 60 FPS because the monitor is incapable of following the computer.
Every monitor these days can display at 60Hz, but gamers are not the average users, we always want performance or an edge.
This is where 120Hz, 144Hz and even 200Hz monitors, enter the arena. Those beasts were created for us, the overachievers, the people who are into CSGO Competitive Gaming!
But someone told me the human eye couldn’t see more than 60 FPS?
That’s an old myth that has since been debunked. We recommend you look at this youtube video for a scientific explanation on the topic.
What type of Panel Type should you choose?
There are currently 3 types of widely available panels:
- VA (Vertical Alignment)
- IPS (In-Plane Switching)
- TN (Twisted Nematic)
They all have different viewing angles,
TN has limited viewing angles, however, it is inexpensive, and it has the best response time. It’s ideal for a Gamer.
IPS has the best color reproduction but is more expensive than it’s counterparts, it is normally used by graphic professionals to get as close as possible to real colors.
VA panels are the least popular, they have the deepest blacks and the best contrasts, however, they are average in all the others specifications you normally look for in a screen.
What is the best Response time for CS:GO?
As a CS:GO Player, another factor you need to consider is the Response time.
The Response time is quoted in MS (Milliseconds), it’s the time it takes for the information to show on your screen.
Because we want the information to show up on our screen as soon as possible the lower the MS is, the better the screen is.
We obliviously recommend you go with the 1ms screens. However, the brand you want might not offer it. We advise you do not go over 4ms.
What is the optimal resolution for Counter Strike?
To be honest, there is no optimal resolution for CS:GO, 1080p will almost be the same as QHD or 4K.
The monitor you purchase might, however, support 2560 x 1440 (QHD) or 3840 x 2160 (4K)
We recommend you play at the maximum resolution available on your screen.
If that maximum resolution does not allow you to reach the number of Frame Per Second needed to match your Refresh Rate. We recommend you lower your settings.
What is the optimal Screen Size for Gaming?
If you are looking for the right balance between size, price, and practicality you should look for a 24-inch monitor.
Having a bigger screen might be a disadvantage, your eyes will have more ground to cover, making slower to spot action in the corners of the screen.
If I were buying a new screen today, I would not purchase a curved monitor for CS:GO, compared to a regular screen they will not immerse you more into the action.
Glossy and Matte a personnal preference ?
Yes, it is completely a personal preference, I always look for a Matte screen (on the left) because when I leave my window open during the day.
A Glossy screen (on the right) will reflect the light making you almost unable to see what is on screen.
I realize that most of the time you won’t play CS:GO in your backyard, but it’s important to know this detail before you purchase.
What are G-Sync and FreeSync and how does it impact me?
So Wikipedia what is Screen Tearing?
Screen tearing is a visual artifact in video display where a display device shows information from multiple frames in a single screen draw.
Essentially it’s when your monitor shows parts of 2 completely different images.
This can happen when your Monitor Refresh rate is not synced with the Frames per second of your screen (lower or higher).
G-Sync is owned by Nvidia; you will have to dig deeper in your pocket for a G-Sync monitor, this technology adds about 100 to 150$ to the cost of a screen. Purchase this only if you have a Nvidia Graphic card or plan to upgrade to one shortly.
FreeSync is owned by AMD, it is completely free and does not add any cost to the monitor. If you have an ATI graphic card, we recommend you make this one of your selection criteria.
What port should my screen have if I want to keep if for a long time?
If you want your monitor to be future proof you should look for HDMI, DVI or DisplayPort (one of the 3 at least) if your screen supports only one them, do not worry, adapter cables are available on Amazon for a few dollars.
